A haunted doll on tour?

The real-life Annabelle isn't the porcelain-faced figure Hollywood made famous. She’s actually a Raggedy Ann doll, kept under lock and key at the Warrens’ Occult Museum in Monroe, Connecticut. The museum was founded by the legendary paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, whose cases inspired The Conjuring franchise.

Recently, Annabelle joined the “Devils on the Run Tour”, hosted by the New England Society for Psychic Research (NESPR), and made a spooky stop in New Orleans in early May. That’s when things started to get weird.

Where did the rumours begin?

During the New Orleans tour stop, some visitors claimed they didn’t see the doll on display. That sparked whispers online suggesting Annabelle had mysteriously gone missing. To make matters creepier, a fire broke out nearby at the Nottoway Resort in White Castle, Louisiana, not long after the tour. This coincidence fueled conspiracy theories tying the haunted doll to the blaze.

Suddenly, social media was buzzing with wild speculations. Had Annabelle escaped? Was she on the loose? Had something gone terribly wrong?

Officials set the record straight

Luckily, Dan Rivera, lead investigator at NESPR, stepped in to clear up the chaos. In a TikTok video posted on Saturday, he gave fans a behind-the-scenes look at the museum and personally showed Annabelle still resting quietly inside her iconic wooden case.

“Annabelle is not missing; she’s not in Chicago,” Rivera said, directly addressing the viral claims. He even confirmed that she’ll be making a public appearance at the 2025 Rock Island Roadhouse Esoteric Expo in Rock Island, Illinois, on October 4.

A follow-up post on NESPR’s Facebook page reinforced the message: “It’s a Rumour... Annabelle has NOT been stolen. The doll is safely in place at the Warren Occult Museum.”

Not the first panic over Annabelle

Believe it or not, this isn’t the first time the doll’s "disappearance" has caused a stir. Back in 2020, similar rumours led Tony Spera—Ed and Lorraine Warren’s son-in-law—to post a YouTube video debunking claims that she had “escaped her enclosure.”

“Annabelle’s here. She didn’t go anywhere. She didn’t take a trip. She didn’t fly first class and she didn’t go out to visit her boyfriend,” he joked. “I’d be concerned if Annabelle really did leave because she's nothing to play with.”

Annabelle’s origins are just as unsettling as her cinematic reputation. In 1970, a nursing student reportedly began experiencing disturbing behaviour from her Raggedy Ann doll. Objects moved on their own, strange notes appeared, and the atmosphere grew darker. That’s when the Warrens were called in—and after their investigation, they concluded that the doll was demonically possessed by a malevolent spirit pretending to be a young girl.

Since then, she’s been one of the most infamous exhibits at the Warrens’ museum, securely locked in a glass-and-wood case with a warning: “Positively Do Not Open.

From haunted history to horror stardom

Annabelle first terrified moviegoers in 2013’s The Conjuring before getting her own film series. Over the years, she’s starred in:

  • Annabelle (2014)

  • Annabelle: Creation (2017)

  • Annabelle Comes Home (2019)

Now, buzz is building again with the upcoming prequel, Annabelle: Creation—a tie-in that might explain the timing of the recent scare.

Whether you're a fan of spooky stories or just love visiting unique destinations, the Warrens’ Occult Museum is one of the most intriguing stops for thrill-seeking travellers. And for those wondering—yes, Annabelle is exactly where she belongs, securely displayed and ready to give you goosebumps (from behind glass, of course).

So, if your travel plans ever include a haunted road trip through New England, this eerie little museum might be the perfect detour—just don’t try to touch the doll.
