Not just Boracay...
If you’ve ever dreamt of riding a panda — well, this might just be the next best thing.
Chongqing, one of China’s most fascinating megacities, just unveiled its latest showstopper: a panda-themed monorail train. And it’s not just a cute gimmick — it’s part of the city’s ongoing efforts to turn everyday transportation into a full-on travel experience. For Muslim travellers seeking unique, family-friendly, and Instagrammable moments in China, this charming ride offers the perfect blend of fun, innovation, and sightseeing.
Nicknamed China’s “8D Magic City,” Chongqing is famous for its mind-bending terrain — think railways that pass through apartment buildings, roads that twist around skyscrapers, and entire neighbourhoods stacked on top of each other. Now, the city’s next-level urban landscape has a new icon: the country’s first panda-themed straddle-type monorail train.
This adorable train debuted on 18 Jun 2025 and instantly became a tourist favourite. From the outside, its minimalist design features a bold panda face outlined in sleek black strokes. Large panoramic windows and a skylight give passengers sweeping views of Chongqing’s mountains, bridges, and iconic architecture — making it a fantastic way to see the city from a whole new angle.
Step inside and it’s like entering a panda paradise. The monorail’s interior is fully decked out with panda-shaped leather seats, panda-head hanging grips, and even souvenir cabinets in the shape of a panda. The centre of the carriage is anchored by a 1.5-metre-tall plush panda statue — perfect for photos with family or friends.
This isn't just a fun gimmick, either. It’s a fully immersive experience that appeals to children, design lovers, and culture-seeking travellers alike.
Despite its playful design, the train is no slouch when it comes to technology. It’s packed with smart features like intelligent lighting, temperature-controlled glass, wireless charging ports, and even magnetic assistive listening devices for enhanced accessibility.
According to Zhang Yang, head of the Chongqing tech development centre at CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicle Co., Ltd., the train also boasts eco-friendly engineering like permanent magnet traction motors and intelligent air conditioning. All of this makes it lighter, more energy-efficient, and better for the planet — without compromising comfort.
The train also operates on a new digital platform with a “digital twin” system — a virtual copy of the train used for real-time monitoring, maintenance, and improved performance throughout its life cycle.
For Muslim travellers, this panda-themed monorail isn’t just a photo op — it’s also a convenient and comfortable way to explore Chongqing’s top attractions.
Here’s why it works well for Muslim visitors:
Family-friendly: Safe, spacious, and stroller-accessible, it’s great for those travelling with kids.
Sightseeing on a budget: The panoramic windows offer stunning city views without needing a pricey tour.
Accessibility to halal food & prayer spaces: Many Chongqing monorail stations connect to major commercial hubs, where you can find Muslim-friendly restaurants and halal-certified spots — especially around areas like Yuzhong District and Sha Pingba. There are also mosques like Chongqing Huguang Mosque within easy reach from the rail lines.
HalalZilla tip: Before hopping on, check out nearby halal eateries or prayer room options using local Muslim-friendly travel apps or guides — many popular stations are within walking distance of facilities catering to Muslim needs.
Here are a few quick tips:
Look for halal food near major stations — especially in areas like Jiefangbei CBD and Ciqikou Ancient Town.
Visit local mosques like the Huguang Mosque for prayer.
Use the monorail to hop between scenic spots such as Liziba Station (where the train famously cuts through a building), Eling Park, and Nanbin Road.
Don’t forget your camera! The panda monorail is a selfie paradise.
