Staying aware of one's surroundings is crucial when travelling, as unexpected incidents can occur at any moment. A recent event in Taiwan serves as a stark reminder of this reality, involving a Filipino tourist who encountered a dangerous situation while visiting a popular attraction.

On 20 Jan, at Shifen Old Street in New Taipei City’s Pingxi district—a bustling area famous for its sky lantern shops—a Filipino woman in her 30s sustained injuries while attempting to capture a photograph. Reports indicate that she posed directly in front of an oncoming train in pursuit of the perfect shot.
Surveillance footage from a nearby store captured the alarming moment when the woman stretched out her arms for the photo, only to be struck by the train. The impact caused her to fall to the ground, resulting in a deep facial cut and multiple injuries to her head, chest, and pelvis.

According to the New Taipei City Fire Department, the tourist suffered a laceration measuring between 3 to 5 centimetres on her head. Emergency responders transported her to Keelung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, where she remained conscious but required surgery for her injuries. On 21 Jan, the Manila Economic and Cultural Office in Taiwan confirmed that she was in stable condition.
Beyond the immediate health concerns, the incident carries potential legal repercussions. Authorities in Taiwan emphasized that railway areas are strictly off-limits to the public. Trespassing on railway property is a serious violation, and the tourist may face substantial fines. If found guilty of endangering railway safety, penalties range from NT$50,000 to NT$100,000 (approximately S$2,070 to S$4,140). In cases where severe injuries occur, fines could escalate to between NT$100,000 and NT$300,000.

This incident underscores the importance of prioritizing safety and respecting local regulations while travelling. The pursuit of memorable photographs should never come at the expense of personal well-being. Restricted areas, such as railway tracks, exist for a reason, and disregarding such boundaries can lead to serious, life-changing consequences.
Whether exploring bustling urban environments or tranquil landscapes, travellers are urged to remain vigilant and adhere to local safety guidelines. Ultimately, the most valuable souvenir from any journey is a safe return home.
