Hunt down these halal restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City for Vietnamese food, Malaysian food and more!

For travellers visiting Kuching, crossing the Sarawak River has always been part of the city’s charm. Now, thanks to an exciting proposal from Grab Malaysia, getting from one side of the river to the other might just get a modern upgrade. Enter the “Grab Sampan”, a pilot project that combines Kuching’s iconic river transport with eco-friendly technology and digital convenience.
According to Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg, the project will feature electric-propulsion sampans that can be booked online via cashless payments, which is perfect for Muslim travellers who prefer a seamless, safe, and contactless experience while exploring the city.
“In Kuching, we are piloting a proof of concept of Grab electric sampan, a modern reinterpretation of our iconic river transport,” he shared.

This initiative is part of Sarawak’s efforts to modernise river-crossing services, particularly for first- and last-mile connectivity. For Muslim travellers, it’s a win-win: a safe, convenient, and eco-friendly ride while experiencing a touch of local tradition. Whether you’re heading to a halal restaurant on the opposite riverbank or visiting a mosque along the waterfront, Grab Sampan could soon become your go-to option for crossing the river.
The pilot project will feature eight pick-up and drop-off points along the Kuching Riverfront, giving travellers multiple convenient locations to hop on and off. The trial is expected to run for six months, allowing authorities to evaluate its feasibility, efficiency, and user experience.
The Sarawak Ministry of Transport and the Sarawak Rivers Board will oversee the project, ensuring that it not only meets modern transportation standards but also respects the city’s unique river culture.
