Fire Breaks Out in Osaka’s Dotonbori: What Muslim Travellers Should Know

Osaka’s lively Dotonbori district—famous for its neon lights, bustling food scene, and the iconic Glico running man billboard—was struck by tragedy this week. A fire broke out in a building housing restaurants on Monday morning, claiming two lives and leaving four others injured.

The blaze started around 9:50 a.m., quickly spreading from the basement to the third floor of the building, and even affecting the fifth and sixth floors of an adjacent one. Local authorities reported that 51 fire trucks were mobilised, and after three hours, the fire was finally brought under control.

Sadly, two firefighters (aged 22 and 55) lost their lives while on duty, found on the sixth floor of the building. Four others were taken to the hospital for treatment: three firefighters in their 20s and 30s, and a woman in her 20s who had been dining in a nearby restaurant. Thankfully, all four are now in stable condition.

The fire covered around 110 square meters, making it one of the most serious incidents in Dotonbori in recent years. Tourists and passersby could see thick black smoke billowing into the sky, with many stopping near the famous Glico sign to watch firefighters at work.

Dotonbori is one of Osaka’s most popular stops for travellers—it’s where you find bustling takoyaki stalls, glowing signboards, and endless entertainment. For Muslim travellers, it’s also home to a growing number of halal-certified restaurants and eateries with Muslim-friendly menus, making it a must-visit spot for food lovers.

If you’re planning a trip to Osaka soon, don’t worry—authorities have already extinguished the fire and are conducting investigations. The wider Dotonbori area remains open, though certain buildings and restaurants directly affected may remain closed for inspection and repairs.

For Muslim travellers, it’s a reminder to always stay updated on local news and safety alerts while abroad. Thankfully, Osaka is generally a very safe city, and this incident doesn’t change the fact that Dotonbori remains a vibrant hub for shopping, sightseeing, and yes—halal-friendly dining.

Final thoughts

The loss of two brave firefighters is a sombre reminder of the risks taken to keep everyone safe. But the swift response from Osaka’s fire department ensured that the blaze was contained quickly, minimising further harm.

Dotonbori may have faced a setback, but this famous riverside strip will no doubt bounce back—ready to welcome visitors once again, including Muslim travellers looking to soak up Osaka’s unique energy, neon lights, and halal food spots.
