In a heartbreaking incident, at least 42 Indian Umrah pilgrims from Hyderabad, Telangana, lost their lives early Monday when the bus carrying them collided with a diesel tanker near Mufrihat on the Mecca–Medina highway. The accident occurred while the pilgrims were travelling from Mecca to Madinah, and the bus immediately caught fire upon impact. Rescue operations were extremely challenging due to the intensity of the flames. Only one young man, Shoaib, survived, though his current condition remains unknown.

The deceased included 18 men, 18 women, and 10 children, highlighting the devastating scale of the tragedy. A total of 54 pilgrims from Hyderabad had travelled through four different Umrah agencies. Of these, 46 were on the bus involved in the accident, while four stayed back in Mecca, and another four travelled separately by car. These eight individuals are safe, but the loss of the others has left families and communities deeply grieved.

Saudi emergency teams rushed to the scene to carry out rescue and relief operations. On the Indian side, the Embassy in Riyadh and the Consulate in Jeddah have been actively involved in supporting the victims’ families. 24x7 control rooms have been established, and staff and volunteers are stationed at hospitals and accident sites to assist. Officials are coordinating closely with the Saudi Hajj and Umrah Ministry, local authorities, and the travel operators involved. Families seeking information can reach the Jeddah Consulate (toll-free: 8002440003) or the Telangana Secretariat (79979 59754 / 99129 19545).
Leaders across India and Telangana have expressed shock and sorrow over the accident. Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences to the bereaved families, confirmed that Indian officials were coordinating with Saudi authorities, and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar assured full support to the affected families, while Union Minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed that the government is providing all possible assistance. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy instructed officials to verify the victims’ identities and coordinate with the Ministry of External Affairs and Saudi authorities. Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi also liaised with travel agencies and Indian officials to ensure the repatriation of bodies and proper care for any injured survivors.

This tragedy is a sobering reminder of the fragility of life, even during spiritual journeys. The loss of 42 lives, including men, women, and children, has left families and communities mourning deeply. May Allah (SWT) have mercy on the souls of the deceased, forgive their sins, and grant them the highest ranks in Jannah. May He give patience and strength to their families during this difficult time. Ameen.
