Malaysia Named World’s No. 1 Muslim-Friendly Travel Destination For The 10th Year

For the 10th year in a row, Malaysia has clinched the ‘Top Muslim-Friendly Destination of the Year’ title in the Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2025 — proving yet again that when it comes to halal travel, this Southeast Asian gem truly leads the way.

The award was announced at the 4th Halal in Travel Awards in Singapore, where Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan proudly accepted the trophy on behalf of the nation. He described the win as a “proud milestone” for Malaysia, giving credit to everyone from industry players to government agencies and local communities who have worked tirelessly to make the country a welcoming haven for Muslim travellers.

Why Malaysia keeps winning

The GMTI, developed by CrescentRating, has been ranking destinations for Muslim travellers since 2015 — and Malaysia has been at the top every single year. That’s no small feat!

So what makes Malaysia so unbeatable?

  • Muslim-friendly infrastructure: From halal-certified restaurants on almost every street to well-maintained prayer facilities in malls, airports, and even tourist attractions, Malaysia sets the gold standard.

  • Industry-wide initiatives: The Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC) plays a big role, spearheading programs like the Muslim-Friendly Tourism and Hospitality Assurance and Recognition (MFAR) and the Muslim-Friendly Tourist Guides (MFTG) certification. These ensure Muslim visitors not only get halal food but also culturally sensitive, knowledgeable service wherever they go.

  • Hospitality as a way of life: As Khairul Firdaus put it, hospitality here isn’t an afterthought — it’s deeply rooted in the country’s culture and heritage.

More than just Halal food and prayer spaces

For Muslim travellers, a destination’s friendliness goes beyond just ticking boxes — it’s about feeling at ease and respected. Malaysia nails this effortlessly. Whether you’re exploring bustling Kuala Lumpur, relaxing on the beaches of Langkawi, or hiking through the lush rainforests of Sabah, you’ll find:

  • Easy access to halal-certified eateries — from humble roadside stalls to Michelin-worthy fine dining.

  • Clearly marked prayer rooms in public spaces and attractions.

  • Events and festivals where modesty and cultural respect are upheld, making it easy for Muslim travellers to join in without worry.

A win that shapes the future of travel

Malaysia also pointed out that the global Muslim travel market is booming and recognitions like this not only strengthen Malaysia’s position but also inspire other countries to step up their game. With more Muslim travellers influencing tourism trends, destinations worldwide are taking note.

And the timing couldn’t be better. As the country gears up for Visit Malaysia Year 2026, travellers can expect vibrant festivities, an even richer mix of cultures, and unforgettable experiences — all wrapped in warm Malaysian hospitality.
