But with so many Padang restaurants in Jakarta, where should you actually go? From popular spots loved by international travellers to long-standing favourites among locals, we've rounded up some of the best Padang restaurants in Jakarta for your next food adventure.
Pagi Sore is one of the most well-known Padang restaurants among tourists visiting Jakarta. The restaurant has several branches around the city, so finding one during your trip shouldn't be too difficult.
Here, you can enjoy authentic Nasi Padang with plenty of side dishes to choose from, including rich rendang, dendeng balado, and creamy, spice-packed gulai. It's not just popular with tourists either. Locals also love Pagi Sore for its comfortable dining spaces, generous portions and wide selection of classic Padang dishes.
Restoran Sederhana is one of the largest Padang restaurant chains in Indonesia. The restaurant is known for serving authentic Padang flavours with a slightly milder taste that appeals to a wider range of diners. First established in Jakarta, the restaurant has since grown into a huge culinary brand with hundreds of branches across Indonesia and overseas.
Compared to traditional Minang food, which can be quite spicy and heavily seasoned, Restoran Sederhana tones down the heat a little while keeping the signature savoury flavours. One of its most popular dishes is Ayam Pop, a skinless chicken dish that is boiled with coconut water and spices before being lightly fried. It's usually served with a distinctive red tomato chilli sauce and has become one of the restaurant's signature dishes.
If you're looking for a truly old-school Padang restaurant in Jakarta, Rumah Makan Surya (RM Surya) in Bendungan Hilir is worth checking out. Established in 1960, this long-standing restaurant has been serving authentic Minang food for decades.
One of the things that keeps people coming back is its commitment to traditional flavours. The restaurant still uses strong, savoury and aromatic Minang spices, with more than 60 different side dishes available each day. Prices are also relatively affordable, ranging from around Rp20,000 to Rp50,000 per portion, making it especially popular with office workers in Central Jakarta during lunchtime.
Located in Bendungan Hilir, Bopet Mini is another legendary Minang restaurant in Central Jakarta. Established in 1982, this restaurant has become a long-standing culinary icon in the Benhil area and is known for its extensive selection of authentic Padang dishes.
One of the must-try dishes here is Gulai Tunjang, made with tender beef tendon and served in a thick, richly spiced curry sauce. You can also try the Beef Rendang or Chicken Rendang, both cooked with coconut and aromatic spices until the flavours are deeply infused. For dessert, don't miss Bubur Kampiun, a traditional Minang sweet made with a mix of rice porridge, black sticky rice, banana compote, lupis and candil, topped with coconut milk and palm sugar.
Sari Bundo is one of Jakarta's legendary Minang restaurants, having been around since 1967. Located on Jalan Ir. H. Juanda in Gambir, Central Jakarta, the restaurant is known for preserving its traditional family recipes and has reportedly been visited by several important Indonesian figures, including former presidents Soekarno, Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur), and B. J. Habibie.
The menu features plenty of classic Padang favourites, including rendang, gulai cincang and Ayam Pop. One of the dishes associated with the restaurant is its crispy fried chicken, which is crunchy almost down to the bone while remaining tender inside. It was reportedly one of former President B. J. Habibie's favourite dishes.
Looking for a more modern take on Padang food? Pada Payakumbuah, owned by Indonesian influencer Arief Muhammad, could be worth adding to your food itinerary. The restaurant was established in 2022 and has since expanded to several branches in major Indonesian cities.
Pada Payakumbuah aims to combine traditional Minang flavours with a more modern and comfortable dining experience. The restaurant sources selected chillies, spices and rice directly from West Sumatra to maintain its authentic flavours. It also uses Solok rice, which has a firmer, less sticky texture and works especially well with rich gulai sauces.
Some of the popular dishes include Dendeng Batokok, available with green or red chilli sauce, Telur Barendo, a crispy Minang-style omelette with delicate lacy edges, and Ikan Salai Balado, smoked fish served with a rich balado sauce. You can also try Gulai Tambusu, featuring beef intestine stuffed with an egg and tofu mixture, served in a savoury curry sauce. The restaurants are designed to be clean, spacious and air-conditioned, making them a comfortable option for families and groups.
Restoran Padang Simpang Raya is known for its authentic Minang cuisine inspired by the Bukittinggi style. The restaurant has been around since 1969 and has expanded to dozens of branches while maintaining a consistent taste. Many of its outlets are also spacious and well-equipped, with facilities such as large parking areas and VIP rooms or event spaces.
If you're a fan of Ayam Pop, this is one restaurant you should have on your list. Often nicknamed the "Ayam Pop Palace", its version features tender white chicken with a savoury flavour, served with signature red chilli sauce and a light broth. Its rendang is another popular choice, featuring large pieces of tender beef cooked in a dark, rich and heavily spiced Minang-style sauce.
For classic Minang-Malay flavours, Padang Garuda is another name worth remembering. The restaurant has been serving its signature food since 1976 and is known for its bold spices, consistent flavours and clean dining spaces. Some branches are also open 24 hours, which is handy if you're looking for a late-night meal.
If you're craving chicken rendang or Padang-style mutton curry, Padang Garuda is a solid choice. One of its Jakarta locations is in Petamburan, West Jakarta, right along a main road, making it relatively easy to find while exploring the city.
Rumah Makan Sepakat is one of the oldest and most legendary Padang restaurants in Jakarta. Established in 1967, the restaurant has been passed down through generations while continuing to use traditional Minang recipes. Today, RM Sepakat has two main locations in South Jakarta, at Pasar Mayestik and Blok M.
What makes Sepakat interesting is its focus on traditional Minang dishes that are becoming harder to find at modern Padang restaurants. The food is prepared early in the morning at the owner's family home using recipes that have been passed down since 1967. Its gulai also has a lighter, more refreshing style inspired by asam padeh, rather than the thick and heavy coconut-based curry found at many other Padang restaurants.
One of the restaurant's most sought-after dishes is Gulai Gajebo, made with beef hump or brisket that has layers of tender meat and rich, chewy fat. You can also try Ikan Tongkol Tauco, a less common Padang dish served with a savoury and slightly salty fermented soybean sauce.
Located on the third floor of Rusunawa Pasar Rumput in Setiabudi, South Jakarta, RM Rinai Pambasuah Luko is one of the more unusual Minang food spots in the city. Established in 1996, this restaurant specialises in home-style dishes inspired by the Solok and Lake Singkarak areas of West Sumatra.
One of the most interesting things about this restaurant is what it doesn't serve. Unlike most Padang restaurants, RM Rinai Pambasuah Luko does not offer rendang or gulai tunjang. Instead, the menu focuses on traditional home-style dishes from Solok. The restaurant also prepares its own spices and uses homemade coconut oil, giving the food a distinctive aroma and flavour.
The dining experience is also different from a typical Nasi Padang restaurant. Instead of serving the rice and side dishes together on one plate, the dishes are served in separate small plates, giving you a more personal dining experience. The vegetable sides are also unique, featuring cabbage and long beans instead of the usual cassava leaves or jackfruit curry, plus a bonus serving of jengkol balado.
For a bonus stop, consider Restoran Padang Sinar Andalas, located just outside Jakarta in Depok, on Jalan Tole Iskandar No. 30. The restaurant has been mentioned by Indonesian public figures such as Praz Teguh and Ayu Ting Ting as one of their favourite Padang restaurants in YouTube podcast appearances.
The restaurant's food is prepared by cooks from Padang Panjang and is known for its bold, rich and aromatic Minang flavours. The dishes are heavily seasoned, savoury and packed with spices, giving them that classic traditional Minang taste. Despite being popular and often busy, the prices remain relatively affordable at around Rp25,000–Rp50,000 per person.
