Not just Boracay...

If you travel around Asia often, there’s a good chance you’ve flown with AirAsia, one of the region’s largest and most awarded low-cost carriers. Known for connecting millions of passengers to over 130 destinations across Asia-Pacific, AirAsia is a go-to airline for budget travellers, backpackers, families, and yes, a huge number of Muslim travellers from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, South Asia, and beyond.
And now, the airline is making headlines for all the right reasons.

On 5 Dec 2025, AirAsia unveiled its brand-new hijab-friendly uniform option for Muslim cabin crew at an event in Kuala Lumpur. Starting from the first quarter of 2026, all female Muslim crew will officially have the choice to wear the hijab on any AirAsia flight, regardless of route or destination.
This may sound like a simple policy change, but its impact goes far beyond uniforms.

The move received high praise from Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar, Malaysia’s Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs).
In a statement, he called the decision:
“Progressive and highly commendable”
A reflection of AirAsia’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity
A respectful recognition of Muslim employees’ religious obligations
He also expressed his appreciation to the asatizah and advisory groups who worked with AirAsia throughout the discussions leading to this change.
According to him, the hijab option is a mature and admirable step, perfectly aligned with the Federal Constitution and the values of Malaysia Madani, which emphasise compassion, respect, and unity.
He added that he hopes AirAsia’s decision will inspire more companies in Malaysia, and perhaps globally, to create workplaces that truly respect employees’ rights to practise their faith.

As Muslim travellers, representation matters more than we sometimes realise.
Seeing a visibly Muslim cabin crew member, especially one confidently wearing her hijab, sends a powerful message:
“You belong here, too.”
For many Muslim passengers, especially hijabi travellers, this simple change enhances the feeling of comfort, trust, and safety onboard. It also reflects an airline culture that listens to its staff and makes meaningful changes based on their needs, something that travellers naturally appreciate.
AirAsia already has a strong Muslim traveller base thanks to:
its many routes connecting Muslim-majority cities,
availability of halal-certified meals on selected flights,
and crew members familiar with Muslim-friendly practices.
This new uniform policy is yet another way the airline is creating more inclusive skies for everyone.
This policy meant a lot to many cabin crew. One Muslim AirAsia crew member shared her personal journey with wearing the hijab, highlighting how the new uniform option makes it easier to practice her faith at work.
AirAsia shared that this reform comes from continuous feedback from its workforce, a sign of an airline that grows alongside its people.
And while not every airline has taken similar steps yet, moves like this often create a ripple effect across the travel industry. When a major carrier leads with inclusivity, others are encouraged to follow.
