If you’ve been following headlines recently, you’ve probably seen reports about renewed clashes along the Thailand-Cambodia border. As of early December 2025, tensions have escalated into serious violence, forcing residents on both sides to evacuate. Thailand’s military reported detecting Cambodian forces inside its territory near Trat Province and launched operations to push them back. Casualties are mounting, with Cambodia reporting six civilian deaths and Thailand confirming the death of one soldier. Injuries are also significant, and hundreds of thousands of families have been displaced, highlighting a major humanitarian crisis. The conflict stems from a century-old border dispute, with flare-ups such as the deadly clashes in July 2025. Despite ceasefire agreements earlier this year, the situation remains fragile, with airstrikes and ground clashes resuming.

The fighting has recently spread, with both sides accusing each other of starting the violence. Civilians, ordinary villagers, families, and children are bearing the brunt, and entire communities are uprooted. Airstrikes have resumed in contested areas, and hundreds of thousands of people have fled to safer zones. The ongoing unrest is rooted in a long-standing territorial dispute along the 800 km Thailand-Cambodia border, contested since the French colonial era. Previous ceasefires have been fragile, and despite international efforts to mediate, including agreements brokered earlier this year, the peace has not held.

For travellers, particularly those seeking Muslim-friendly experiences, this situation is a serious warning. Border provinces and overland crossings between Thailand and Cambodia are currently unsafe, and most land routes are closed or heavily controlled. Overland travel, a popular option for backpackers or budget travellers, is not viable for now. However, major tourist destinations far from the border, such as Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and various islands, remain open and largely unaffected. Muslim-friendly facilities in these areas, including halal restaurants, mosques, and hotels, are still operational. That said, travellers must avoid flashpoints, check official travel advisories, and postpone cross-border plans until stability returns. Safety should always come first, and careful planning ensures that trips can remain both enjoyable and halal-friendly.

If you’re planning a trip, it’s important to know exactly which areas are currently affected by the Thailand-Cambodia clashes. On the Thai side, frontline provinces include Ubon Ratchathani, Sisaket, Surin, Buri Ram, Si Sa Ket, and parts of Trat and Chanthaburi. These areas have seen airstrikes, rocket-fire skirmishes, and evacuations, and some districts are under heightened alert or martial-law-style restrictions due to their proximity to the border.

On the Cambodian side, the provinces most affected are Oddar Meanchey, Preah Vihear, and Banteay Meanchey. These regions have experienced active fighting, displacement of residents, and closures of border checkpoints.
For travellers, especially Muslim and halal-conscious travellers, this means that visiting or passing through these border provinces is risky and should be avoided for now. Instead, it’s safer to focus on destinations far from the conflict, where Muslim-friendly amenities like halal restaurants, mosques, and hotels remain accessible and safe. Staying informed about which regions are affected helps ensure that your travels remain secure, peaceful, and fully halal-friendly.
