Whether you want to catch a dreamy sunset, take photos with Mount Kinabalu in the background, explore traditional villages or discover unique architecture, here are some of the best Instagrammable places in Sabah, Malaysia to add to your bucket list.

1. Tanjung Aru Beach, Famous for Its Stunning Sunset

If there's one place you shouldn't rush through in Kota Kinabalu, it's Tanjung Aru Beach. The beach is famous for its beautiful sunsets, but there's more to do than simply watching the sun go down. You can relax on the sandy beach, try some water activities or simply enjoy the sea breeze before settling in for sunset.

For an extra special photo, try paddleboarding in the sea around sunset. The combination of the golden sky, calm water and your silhouette on the paddleboard can create one seriously Instagrammable shot. Stay until after sunset and grab some local food nearby to end the day.

2. Sosodikon Hill, The Perfect Mount Kinabalu Viewpoint

Sosodikon Hill in Kundasang is one of the best places to enjoy a beautiful view of Mount Kinabalu without taking on a difficult hike. The trail is relatively gentle and doesn't take too much effort, making it a good option for families and travellers who want to enjoy Sabah's mountain scenery without a challenging trek.

If you're planning to visit early in the morning for sunrise, make sure to bring a warm jacket because Kundasang can get surprisingly cold. We actually left Kota Kinabalu at around 3 AM to catch the sunrise here. Once the sun came up, Mount Kinabalu appeared in all its glory, while the colourful flowers around the hill added an extra touch to our photos.

3. Semporna, Turquoise Waters and Stunning Island Views

For tropical island lovers, Semporna is one of the most photogenic destinations in Sabah. Two spots that deserve a place on your itinerary are Bohey Dulang and Kapalai. Bohey Dulang is famous for its breathtaking viewpoint overlooking a turquoise lagoon and a collection of volcanic islands, while Kapalai is known for its unique overwater resort surrounded by crystal-clear waters.

If you're heading to Bohey Dulang, be prepared for a hike of around 30–45 minutes to reach the viewpoint. The climb can be tiring, but the view from the top is absolutely worth it. For the best photos, take your time at the viewpoint and capture the contrast between the blue lagoon, green hills and surrounding islands.

4. Tegudon Tourism Village, A Scenic Suspension Bridge

Located in Kota Belud, Tegudon Tourism Village (TTV) is another beautiful spot to add to your Sabah itinerary. The village is especially photogenic thanks to its traditional suspension bridge stretching across a clear, rocky river, with lush green rice fields and the majestic Mount Kinabalu creating a stunning backdrop.

The scenery here gives you a glimpse of Sabah's quieter countryside and makes a refreshing change from the busy streets of Kota Kinabalu. Walk across the suspension bridge, take photos by the river or simply enjoy the peaceful surroundings. If you're lucky enough to visit when the sky is clear, Mount Kinabalu can make your photos even more spectacular.

5. Atkinson Clock Tower, A Historic Spot with a City View

For a little history during your Sabah adventure, make your way to Atkinson Clock Tower in Kota Kinabalu. Built in 1905, this historic wooden clock tower is one of the city's most recognisable landmarks and one of the few structures that survived World War II. Its charming old-school design also makes it a great backdrop for travel photos.

The best time to visit is around 7–9 AM, when the weather is cooler, or in the late afternoon before sunset. The area around the clock tower also connects to a treetop walkway trail where you can enjoy some greenery in the middle of the city. On a clear day, you'll have plenty of opportunities to capture beautiful photos while exploring the area.

6. Desa Dairy Farm, A Little Taste of New Zealand in Sabah

Step into Desa Dairy Farm in Kundasang, and you might momentarily forget that you're in Malaysia. With rolling green hills, cool mountain air, blue skies and Mount Kinabalu in the distance, the scenery has often been compared to the landscapes of New Zealand.

One of the most popular photo spots is in front of the farm's cattle area, where the cows and green hills create that classic countryside look. The farm is also a fun stop for families, as visitors can interact with the animals, feed the cows, watch the milking process and try fresh dairy products. With Mount Kinabalu as the backdrop, don't forget to take plenty of family photos while you're here.

7. Mari Mari Cultural Village, Traditional Houses and Sabah's Indigenous Culture

If you want your Sabah trip to be more than just sightseeing, Mari Mari Cultural Village is a great place to learn about the region's rich cultural heritage. This living museum introduces visitors to the traditions and lifestyles of five indigenous tribes from Borneo through cultural performances, traditional activities and hands-on experiences.

It's also a fun place to take photos. You can explore traditional houses, see local crafts being made and take photos with traditional props and cultural outfits. If you're interested in bringing home something unique, set aside a little extra budget for locally made handicrafts and souvenirs.

8. Sabah Art Gallery, An Instagrammable Spot for Art and Architecture

Even before you walk inside Sabah Art Gallery, the building itself is worth photographing. Its futuristic architecture resembles a giant octagonal basket, with four floors tilted outward at a dramatic angle. The unusual design makes the gallery one of the most distinctive buildings to see in Kota Kinabalu.

Inside, you'll find an equally creative space filled with artworks and installations from local and international artists. From paintings and sculptures to contemporary works inspired by Borneo, there's plenty to explore. You can also take photos with the colourful artworks and unique installations, making this a great stop if you're looking for something different from Sabah's usual beaches and mountain views.

9. Hounon Ridge Farmstay & Camping, an Aesthetic Stay with Stunning Mountain Views

Hounon Ridge Farmstay & Camping is a great accommodation option in Kundasang if you're looking for a place surrounded by beautiful nature. Located in Kampung Himbaan, Bundu Tuhan, Ranau, Sabah, the property offers stunning views of Mount Kinabalu right from the accommodation area. What's even better is that Hounon Ridge Farmstay & Camping is also open to day visitors, so you don't have to stay overnight to enjoy the scenery. You can simply stop by to take photos, enjoy Kundasang's cool weather, and admire the beautiful Mount Kinabalu views.

If you're planning a day visit, the entrance fee is quite affordable at RM5 per person. Hounon Ridge Farmstay & Camping is open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. It may be a little far from Kota Kinabalu city centre, but the journey is definitely worth it once you see the views.
