Ramadan is much more than just fasting!
Istanbul is a city known for many things—its rich history, breathtaking skyline, and, of course, its deep love for cats. Walk through its winding streets, and you’ll find countless feline residents lounging on rooftops, curled up on café chairs, or basking in the sun along the Bosphorus. But among them all, one cat stood out and became a global legend: Tombili.

Tombili was no ordinary street cat. With his plump frame and signature relaxed pose—leaning against a step with one paw casually draped over the edge—he captured the hearts of Istanbul’s residents and visitors alike. His name, “Tombili,” is a common Turkish term of endearment for chubby pets, perfectly fitting his round and lovable appearance.
Locals in the Kadıköy district often saw Tombili sitting in his favourite spot, watching the world go by as if he had not a single care in the world. He embodied the laid-back, effortless charm that street cats of Istanbul are famous for, and it wasn’t long before someone snapped a photo of him in his iconic pose.

The photo of Tombili lounging like a true king quickly went viral. Cat lovers around the world shared the image, turning him into an internet sensation. He became a symbol of contentment, relaxation, and the carefree lifestyle many dream of but few achieve.
Sadly, Tombili passed away in August 2016, but his story didn’t end there. Recognising his special place in the community, locals started a petition to honour him with a statue. The campaign gained widespread support, and soon enough, a bronze sculpture of Tombili was created and placed in his favourite spot in October 2016. The statue perfectly captures his signature laid-back stance, ensuring that he will always be a part of the neighbourhood.

Today, visitors to Istanbul can find Tombili’s statue in the Ziverbey area of Kadıköy, on the city’s Asian side. It has become a small but meaningful attraction, drawing tourists, photographers, and fellow cat lovers who stop by to snap a picture or pay their respects. Locals still leave food and water near the statue, keeping up Istanbul’s long tradition of caring for its street cats.
Tombili’s story is just one of many that showcase Istanbul’s unique relationship with its feline residents. In this city, cats aren’t just pets or strays—they are part of the culture, cherished by the people who live here. Whether it’s through lovingly maintained feeding stations, cosy shelters, or even a statue of a legendary lounging cat, Istanbul’s love for its four-legged friends is on full display.
So, if you ever find yourself wandering the charming streets of Kadıköy, take a moment to visit Tombili. Sit beside his statue, take in the view, and, for just a moment, embrace the art of relaxation—just like the legendary cat himself.
